It's Not in His Nature

I’ve been thinking a lot about the nature of God. Who is He? What are His characteristics? How is He prone to behave?
Obviously, it’s impossible for me define the ways and attributes of God in a singular blog post. But there are some consistent characteristics about Him that we can ascertain from scripture and even personal experience. Things like the fact that He’s kind, He is compassionate, it’s in His nature to consider those who have been overlooked, downtrodden, brokenhearted or even forgotten. He is a protector. He is caring. He is strong and able.
In addition to all of that, there’s one key characteristic that He possesses that we don’t often talk about. And that is the fact that God, in His very nature, is JUST.
What does that mean? It means that Who He is, inherently, authentically and by default, leans in the direction of what is true, what is fair, and what is equitable.
You don’t believe me? Let’s talk scripture.
Deuteronomy 32:4 says, "He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He.” Psalm 7:11 calls Him a “righteous judge.” And Acts 10:34-35 reminds us that God “shows no partiality.” He is by default, a just God!
So, what does that say about injustice? What does that say about the things that lead towards impartiality, immorality, and unfairness? It's simple.
God being just in His nature means that injustice, by its very definition, is not only immoral but it is also, Un-Godly!
Why is this important? Why should you care? You should care because if you claim to be a follower of Christ, it is nearly impossible to truly serve a just God and, so easily, turn a blind eye to injustice. How can you be a disciple of a God Whose eye turns towards the lowly, the forgotten and the cast away and lack compassion?
If I am a follower of Christ, it is imperative that I attempt to mirror His character, that I hold to His precepts, that I obey His commandments and that what hurts His heart at minimum gains my attention, not my annoyance.
So today, when you hear the plight of the widow, the immigrant, or the disenfranchised. When you hold the pen that gets to redraw the lines. When you have the power to silence the voices of your neighbor. When you get the opportunity to turn a blind eye and deaf ear while your brother and sister cry out for assistance in their fight against hatred and oppression. Whether you wear red, blue or some other color in between. When it all comes to an end, ask yourself, which principles, not party, do you tend to lean toward the most? And even more than that, do your actions, closed door conversations, or moral inclinations point towards the God you claim to serve, or have you lost your way?
For those who are fighting, rallying, speaking out for what is true, what is just, what is RIGHT; keep fighting. Keep standing. Keep letting your voice be heard.
Because the fact of the matter is this: Justice isn’t justice if it’s just for some of us.
Justice is Godly. Justice is Righteous. Justice is Holy. Justice is for us all.
Signed,
A concerned citizen proposing a new thought.... for your consideration.
